Strangers – Today

On this day in history, December 21 . . .
Since 1814, The Athenaeum has been visited by politicians, diplomats, scientists, and literary figures. Our guest book was traditionally called the Record of Strangers: each non-member, or "Stranger" was usually signed in by an Athenaeum member. Here are the Strangers who signed in on this date over the years.

Elihu Spencer Miller, September 3, 1817 – March 6, 1879

Elihu Spencer Miller was an American lawyer and educator. He graduated from what is today Princeton University before studying law and being admitted to the Pennsylvania bar in 1843. He had a successful practice in Philadelphia for some years before becoming the chair of real estate and equity jurisprudence in the law department at the University of Pennsylvania in 1852. When the Confederate forces invaded Maryland and Pennsylvania during the Civil War, Miller led a volunteer militia near the states' borders for about two months in 1863. In 1868 he was named Dean of the University of Pennsylvania's Law School, a position he held for four years until his resignation over the decision to move the Law School from Center City to West Philadelphia.
