Henry William Tancred, May 23, 1782 — May 20, 1860
Henry William Tancred was a British politician. He was educated at Eton College and later Cambridge before being a Member of Parliament for Banbury in 1832. Tancred continued his career in Parliament for the next 26 years, serving variously as Queen's Counsel and Treasurer. He was also a founding member of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, an organization with the goal of publishing scientific and scholarly texts that could be obtained and read by the expanding working and middle classes of mid-19th century England.
