Strangers – Today

On this day in history, November 21 . . .
Since 1814, The Athenaeum has been visited by politicians, diplomats, scientists, and literary figures. Our guest book was traditionally called the Record of Strangers: each non-member, or "Stranger" was usually signed in by an Athenaeum member. Here are the Strangers who signed in on this date over the years.

Henry William Tancred, May 23, 1782 — May 20, 1860

Henry William Tancred was a British politician. He was educated at Eton College and later Cambridge before being a Member of Parliament for Banbury in 1832. Tancred continued his career in Parliament for the next 26 years, serving variously as Queen's Counsel and Treasurer. He was also a founding member of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, an organization with the goal of publishing scientific and scholarly texts that could be obtained and read by the expanding working and middle classes of mid-19th century England.
