Strangers – Today

On this day in history, August 28 . . .
Since 1814, The Athenaeum has been visited by politicians, diplomats, scientists, and literary figures. Our guest book was traditionally called the Record of Strangers: each non-member, or "Stranger" was usually signed in by an Athenaeum member. Here are the Strangers who signed in on this date over the years.

George Tucker, August 20, 1775 — April 10, 1861

George Tucker was an American politician, educator, and author. Born in Bermuda, Tucker emigrated to the United States at age 20. He studied law and established a practice in Virginia before entering politics in 1816 with his election to the state legislature. In 1819 he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving until 1825. Following his term, Tucker was appointed professor of moral philosophy at the University of Virginia. He relocated to Philadelphia after retiring from teaching. Tucker authored many works throughout his career, ranging from early science-fiction to historical and political works. The Athenaeum holds two of Tucker's works that he himself gifted to the library.
