After seeing the Lynnewood Hall exhibition in The Athenaeum's Haas Gallery, are you are eager to learn even more about the Widener family?
Join us for this special hands-on tour at The Rosenbach that tells the intertwined story of the Wideners, the Rosenbachs, and the sinking of the Titanic. You will view and even handle rare documents relating to history’s most famous tragedy at sea, a moment that Dr. ASW Rosenbach would later call “the most glorious incident in the romance of book-collecting.”
When the RMS Titanic sank in the icy waters of the North Atlantic on April 15, 1912, it took with it George Dunton Widener, son of Peter AB Widener who built Lynnewood Hall, and George's son Harry Elkins Widener, who had been a friend and collecting protégé of Dr. Rosenbach. Harry’s mother, socialite Eleanor Elkins Widener, turned to Dr. Rosenbach for help creating the Harry Elkins Widener Memorial Library at his alma mater, Harvard University, setting the stage for the Rosenbach Company’s success.
This event is for Athenaeum members only. Space is very limited. Attendees will meet at The Rosenbach (2008-2010 Delancey Place, Philadelphia).
Athenaeum member price: $35.00
