Join us for an afternoon program with Meg Butterworth, the great-great-granddaughter of Justus Strawbridge, co-founder of the iconic Strawbridge & Clothier department store. She will relate the story of her family's business from the time it opened in 1868 at the corner of 8th and Market Streets to when it was sold to the May Company in 1996. Over the course of 128 years, the store grew to become one of the largest employers in the Delaware Valley with thirteen branch locations and 27 Clover discount stores. At the time of its sale, the company was the oldest department store in the country with continuous family ownership and management.
Originally from the Philadelphia area, Meg Butterworth now lives in Seattle where she is a contributing writer to several magazines and news publications. Philadelphia’s Strawbridge & Clothier: From Our Family to Yours is her first book.
