Constructing Knowledge: 300 Years of The Carpenters’ Company

Exhibition opening!

2024 marks the 300th anniversary of the Carpenters’ Company of the City and County of Philadelphia. This exhibit celebrates the past 300 years of the Company and its membership, and explore the way in which those members physically constructed the landscape of Philadelphia, while contributing to the standards and definitions of the current architecture, engineering, and construction trades.

Some 150 men and women, all of them prominent architects, building contractors or structural engineers, carry on the 300-year tradition of The Carpenters' Company of the City and County of Philadelphia — giving form to the future. From the 18th-century members who erected Independence Hall, Christ Church and Carpenters' Hall to the members of today, innovation in design and technical achievement have contributed to their pre-eminent reputation.

Curators: Jeff Cohen, Alyssa Constad, Tom Stokes, Carol Smith, Janice Woodcock
