Young Friends Event—Vibe Check: The Vibrational Science behind Vinyl Records
Consonant Collective

We all love the warm crackle of a spinning vinyl record, but how does the sound get from the record to our ears? Come learn how with the Consonant Collective, who will guide you from the record player’s needle through wires and speakers and straight to your ears. We’ll not only teach you about the science behind vinyl records, leading you from audio recording to vinyl pressing, but will also show you some truly odd gadgets like the VibePod and contact microphone, whip up a little sound wizardry, and amaze with a lovingly-restored 1947 Rek-O-Kut Challenger Record Maker. Bring your own music or think up a message to a friend or loved one and leave with your very own 7” record (3 minutes max).

Consonant Collective is an arts group that creates books, zines, records, and performances, spearheaded by writer Katie Haegele and DIY enthusiast Joe Carlough. Their latest venture into the DIY is the On the Record Poetry series, a curated selection of poetry chapbooks and vinyl records of readings from the authors, created at home using two restored record lathes, a 1937 Presto 6DSP and a 1947 Rek-O-Kut Challenger.
