Author Amy Cohen will discuss the long and influential presence of African Americans in Philadelphia and how this history is reflected in monuments, markers, murals, and so forth. After giving a general overview of her book, she will focus on the importance of Washington Square as a gathering place for free and enslaved Black people during the eighteenth century.

Amy Cohen is an educator, historian, and writer. After twenty years teaching social studies, she became Director of Education for History Making Productions, a documentary film company, and she is a contributing writer for Hidden City Philadelphia.
