Strangers – Today

On this day in history, February 22 . . .
Since 1814, The Athenaeum has been visited by politicians, diplomats, scientists, and literary figures. Our guest book was traditionally called the Record of Strangers: each non-member, or "Stranger" was usually signed in by an Athenaeum member. Here are the Strangers who signed in on this date over the years.

Samuel Morris Wickersham, March, 1819 — 1894

Samuel Morris Wickersham was an American businessman and military officer. He studied in Philadelphia before establishing an iron brokerage business. At the time of this visit, Wickersham and his business were based in Pittsburgh, but he was engaged in a courtship with Frances Belt of Philadelphia, following the death of his first two wives at young ages. It is possible that Wickersham's courtship brought him to the city, during which time he made this visit to the Athenaeum. Wickersham was also involved in mining operations in Michigan's upper peninsula early on in its settlement. Upon the outbreak of the Civil War, he fought for the Union army, commanding regiments in Pennsylvania.
