Strangers – Today

On this day in history, February 16 . . .
Since 1814, The Athenaeum has been visited by politicians, diplomats, scientists, and literary figures. Our guest book was traditionally called the Record of Strangers: each non-member, or "Stranger" was usually signed in by an Athenaeum member. Here are the Strangers who signed in on this date over the years.

Andrew Hutchins Mickle, October 25, 1805 – January 25, 1863

Andrew H. Mickle was an American businessman and politician. He worked for tobacconist George B. Miller, and eventually married his daughter and took over the business. Mickle was elected 67th Mayor of New York City, a position he held from 1846 to 1847. He was reportedly placed on the ballot after his mother-in-law offered a $5,000 bribe to Tammany Hall, which they accepted. Mickle retired from politics after his mayoral term, and returned to the tobacco business. Mickle's entry into the Record of Strangers is notable in that it contains possibly the only "doodle" in the Record, a hand with a finger pointing to his name.
