Our guest book was traditionally called the Record of Strangers: each non-member, or "Stranger" was usually signed in by an Athenaeum member. Thomas Sloan Bell, October 22, 1800 — June 06, 1861

Thomas Sloan Bell was an American lawyer, jurist, and politician. Bell studied the law and was admitted to the bar before setting up a private practice in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Bell rose to local prominence and was appointed president judge of multiple Pennsylvania counties, before being appointed to the state's Supreme Court. He also served in the State Senate. Bell visited the Athenaeum multiple times over the years.
