Our guest book was traditionally called the Record of Strangers: each non-member, or "Stranger" was usually signed in by an Athenaeum member. William Mervine, March 14, 1791 – September 15, 1868

William Mervine was an American naval officer. He was born in Philadelphia and entered military service in 1809, serving in the War of 1812, Mexican-American War, and the American Civil War. Mervine was made a captain in 1841, and had reached the rank of rear admiral by the time of his death in 1868. Two U.S. Navy destroyers were named in his honor.

Harry Cage, April 5, 1795 — December 31, 1858

Harry Cage was an American lawyer and politician. He studied law and established a practice in Mississippi before being elected to the Supreme Court of Mississippi in 1829. Cage visited the Athenaeum during his term as U.S. congressman, which lasted until his resignation in 1835. Following this term, Cage retired to his plantation in Louisiana.
