Anson Jones, January 20, 1798 – January 9, 1858
Anson Jones was an American medical doctor, politician, and diplomat. Born in Massachusetts, he studied medicine and had several unsuccessful practices and businesses in New York, before relocating to Philadelphia, where he earned a medical degree and became involved with the Masons and Odd Fellows. Jones quit medicine in 1832 and moved to New Orleans before drifting to Texas, where he was drawn to support Texan independence. He rose through political circles and was appointed Texan Minister to the United States by Sam Houston in 1838. It was in this role that Jones visited the Athenaeum, as he tried to build support for recognition of Texan independence. He subsequently returned to Texas and was elected to the senate, and was later appointed Texas' Secretary of State. Jones then succeeded Houston to become the fourth and final president of the Republic of Texas, though he quickly fell out of favor with the public as he bungled the annexation process. Jones' physical and mental health soon deteriorated, and he committed suicide in 1858.
