WRITING THE POWER OF PLACE | Creating a Memorable Setting in Children's Books
Karel Hayes

In this 3-hour class, we will explore how important words and illustrations are for creating the perfect setting in books for young readers — they set the stage whereupon the characters can perform and make the story more immersive. How can this be done effectively and memorably? Who can forget Clement Hurd’s illustrations of the bedroom in Goodnight Moon or the words that described the “ramshackle house on top of a high hill” in Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach. Karel Hayes will also share her own writing experiences — missteps and stumbles — and demonstrate her process for creating the illustrations and setting for a 32-page picture book.

Author and Illustrator Karel Hayes has written and illustrated twelve children’s books — including The Winter Visitors — and illustrated over twenty-eight books. In the spring of 2022 her first middle grade chapter book, The Mystery of Lake Kanakondah, was published and soon was followed by two more chapter books.
