Each month, gather with fellow cinephiles for a lively discussion. Watch the selected movie on your own, then come to the meeting with your insights and opinions. The Athenaeum makes every effort to select films for discussion that are currently playing in theaters or available to stream.
As part of the fall theme "Horror Films and American History," October's film is Them! (1954) directed by Gordon Douglas. In this horror/sci-fi mashup, the earliest atomic tests in New Mexico cause common ants to mutate into giant man-eating monsters that threaten civilization. The discussion will consider Them! in the context of Cold War invader and infiltrator films. The discussion group will also screen a 1948 Looney Tunes episode Haredevil Hare.
