A Complicated Passion: The Life & Work of Agnes Varda
Carrie Rickey

Join us for the release of Carrie Rickey's forthcoming book, the first major biography of French filmmaker, photographer and installation artist Agnes Varda (1928--2019).  Over the course of her 65-year career, Varda wrote and directed some of the most acclaimed films of her era, from her tour de force Cléo from 5 to 7 (1962), a classic of modernist cinema, to the beloved documentary The Gleaners and I (2000) four decades later. She helped to define the French New Wave and inspired a generation of filmmakers.  Rickey will discuss the "complicated passions" that informed Varda's life and work and screen a Varda short film.

A book signing will follow the program. Book sales arranged through Head House Books.

Carrie Rickey, film critic emerita of The Philadelphia Inquirer, has contributed to a variety of publications and websites including Artforum, Art in America, Politico, The New York Times, Village Voice, and The Wall Street Journal. On scheduled Monday afternoons you may find her hosting the Athenæum's film series.
