Hail the Conquering Hero (1944)
George Strimel

Like his war-hero father who was killed in action during World War I, Woodrow Lafayette Pershing Truesmith (Eddie Bracken) leaves his small town to join the Marines during World War II. But when he's given a medical discharge after only a month, he takes a job at a San Diego shipyard and writes letters to his mother about his fictitious wartime exploits. When he returns home, he discovers that his innocent lies have spread further than he expected. Written and directed by Preston Sturges.

Sturges was nominated for a 1945 Academy Award for his screenplay of this satirical comedy-drama.

In a burst of creativity unmatched in Hollywood history, Preston Sturges directed a string of all-time classic comedies from 1939 through 1948, all from screenplays he alone had written. Cynical and sophisticated, romantic and sexually frank, crazily breakneck and endlessly witty, his movies continue to influence filmmakers and remain popular to this day.

Reprising his popular matinee series from last summer, local film collector and shareholder George Strimel will present a new selection of Sturges’s creations over four Thursdays this August.
