Please join us for an evening soiree of mandolin and classical guitar music with Duo Mantar. Duo Mantar is comprised of two virtuosos, American classical guitarist, Adam Levin, and Israeli Mandolinist, Jacob Reuven. They are described as “visceral and imaginative” and “transcendental and exuberant,” respectively. This novel pairing is rare in the chamber music world; however, the two plucked instruments are complimentary and are natural extensions of one another. Levin and Reuven began playing together in 2017 and share a passion for Israeli Music, Hebrew, and Jewish songs. Both are committed to expanding the repertoire available for mandolin and guitar by actively commissioning today’s most sought-after composers. In June 2021, they released Music from the Promised Land on the Naxos Label. It charted number one on the Billboard Traditional Classical Albums Chart. They are currently working on a recording a monographic album of music by Israeli-American composer, Avner Dorman, as well as a new collection of commissions inspired by Vivaldi and Piazzolla’s Seasons.
This program focuses on the touching story of Rachela Zelmanowicz-Olewski, a Jewish mandolin player from Poland who, as a young woman, played in the Auschwitz women's orchestra under the famous violinist and conductor Alma Rose. Rachel's story is of a heroic survival in Auschwitz through the power of her mandolin music. She was liberated in Bergen-Belsen and later raised a family in Israel until she passed away in 1987. This concert is about her personally and about the untold story of the mandolin during the Holocaust.
The Classical Guitar Soirée Recital Series at the Athenaeum of Philadelphia is offered in partnership with the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society. A Soirée is a lively and intimate gathering that increases the knowledge of the participants through conversation and music. The classical guitar is often best listened to and understood within this context.
