The Athenaeum of Philadelphia fosters new ideas and sparks new perspectives. To that end, we are pleased to launch “The Salon,” an opportunity for Athenaeum members to hear from provocative, informed leaders, and discuss the challenges and issues they raise. Meet other members, learn something new, and broaden your own point of view in the intimate and inspiring setting of The Athenaeum of Philadelphia’s Board Room.
The Salon series launch, Philadelphia: Strengths and Prospects, will be held on first Mondays in March, April and May. Each 90-minute Salon will feature a short presentation followed by an open, moderated discussion. Sessions will be off the record and accommodate up to 20 people. $20/salon

Former two-term Governor Tom Wolf and his wife Frances have recently traded their long-time family home in York, PA for Philadelphia's vibrant cultural scene. No stranger to big cities, Wolf attended graduate school at the University of London and MIT, where his PhD thesis won the American Political Science Association’s National Dissertation Award. A former Peace Corp volunteer, owner of a family business - for which he once operated a forklift - and PA treasurer, Tom Wolf maintains his interest in public policy and the urban landscape.

Michael Gary, head of Friends Select School since 2016, received a BA from Trinity College, Connecticut and a Masters of Education from Harvard University. Reflecting his abiding interest in education, diversity and community, he currently serves on the boards of the Pennsylvania Association of Independent Schools, Parkway Council, Athenaeum of Philadelphia, Independent Trust, Reading Allowed, and Trinity College.

Matt Rader, 37th President of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, received his Bachelor’s in Architectural History from the University of Virginia, and a Masters of Business Administration from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. His professional experiences include the Fairmount Park Commission, Urban Land Institute, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. He has focused PHS on using horticulture to advance the health and well-being of the Greater Philadelphia Region: the yearly, renowned Philadelphia Flower Show reflects this transforming mission.
As executive director of the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia, Paul Steinke guides this membership-based organization whose mission is to promote the appreciation, adaptive re-use and development of the Philadelphia region’s historic buildings and landscapes. Previously, Paul served as general manager of the Reading Terminal Market and also as the founding Executive Director of University City District, a neighborhood improvement organization, central to the revitalization of West Philadelphia. A lifelong Philadelphian, Paul holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and economics from Pennsylvania State University and an MBA from Drexel University.
