Since 1814, The Athenaeum has been visited by politicians, diplomats, scientists, and literary figures. Our guest book was traditionally called the Record of Strangers: each non-member, or "Stranger" was usually signed in by an Athenaeum member. William Phillips, Jr.,  April 10, 1750 – May 26, 1827

At the time of the visit by Mr. Phillips to the Athenaeum he was the lieutenant governor of Massachusetts, a post he held from 1812-1823.
